The timelines purpose in this project is to connect fashion to war. At first glance, these two things seem completely unrelated but as one analyses further you can start to see just how linked the events of this time are. War and fashion are culture and culture has very little boundaries when it comes to topics. The way culture is perpetuated is through influence, whether that be through ideas or a person or war. This war was the First WORLD War, it encompassed more than disputes and anyone living in that time was affected by it. To show this connection between culture (fashion) and its influencer (war) we had to find a medium that would allow us to express our project in an understandable and entertaining way. Fashion is a very visual thing so it makes sense to use something that involves aesthetics. Also, there is a very large focus on History within our project and timelines are generally a very good way to show chronological information.
We started by deciding how we would organise the timeline, there had always been a distinction between men and women, their role in war and their dress. So we decided to dedicate half the timeline to clothing/uniforms worn by men and the other half to women. After this we had to start focusing on what, specifically we wanted to cover and how we would relate that to the war. We found the most significant battles and have represented them on the timeline to see what was going on during certain years and how much impact the war had during that time. For example, 1916 was a year when a lot of famous battles happened and so the war was obviously more prevalent and you can see this through the clothing changes afterwards; now that so much has happened in the war that could potentially influence culture and war equipment.
Drawing all the images needed to create this project was a very time consuming task, however it allowed us to specifically analyse the details of the clothing seen. We also needed to find a way to convey more information than just images across to our audience and so we have small labels explaining the evolution of some equipment and designs as well as a general overview for what changed at the top and bottom of the timeline. Overall, the purpose of this timeline is to give an overview and general understanding of the topic we have chosen which we hope will interest people enough to urge them to take a closer look at our website and research or look up the information themselves.
