How/ to what
extent did the First Total War affect the clothing during the war on the battlefields
and on the home front, and why?
Hypothesis: Our
research question is asking how the First World War affected all the clothing
and fashion from 1914 to 1918, and why that happened. As there was a lot of
scarcity in the beginning of the war because most of the money and materials
went to the War, we think that the fashion in the beginning of the war was very
limited and not very special. Throughout the war, at the home front, money was
building up so there were new inventions coming out. Therefore people had a lot
more choice when they wanted to buy something, and they were willing to buy
more overall because most people had so little properties in the beginning of
the War. Regarding the clothing at the war, we think that in the beginning the
uniforms were not appropriate at all. Later the countries probably realized
that the clothing was not going to make them win the war, an the clothing they
first came with, would only kill more lives because the colors were to obvious,
or materials weren’t waterproof or good against the weather, and that shoes weren’t
appropriate for tragic ground. So the uniforms improved throughout the war. Our
Hypothesis is that throughout the war, the uniforms increased regarding quality,
and the fashion at the home front in the beginning was limited but later in the
war when money was build up, there was more variety in choices and people
bought more clothes.
