In our History, English, and Drama class we have been focusing on the First World War, the causes of it, the experience of war both on the battlefield and on the home front, and the war poetry/ letters that were written by the soldiers, to soldiers, etc. We have studied the impact that the First Total War had on the soldiers, the civilians, and societies as a whole. The entire grade 10 has visited the town Ypres, situated in Belgium. Ypres was involved heavily in world war one because it underwent three major artillery attacks. During this trip we saw World war one sites, visited museums and cemeteries, and hear about personal stories of individuals involved in the war and learn about the effects this war had on societies. The interdisciplinary unit is a task graded in two subjects, and in one separate ID. In this task we had to choose a topic, research about it, and with the information collected, we had to design or construct an exhibition piece. Now we have created groups of four. During the first few lessons we have been discussing the different ideas of all the group members. It was hard to make a choice, as there were so many different projects we could do. After discussing what we could do with sound, photography, art, etc., we had come up with a topic that suited all of us, fashion and clothing. It seemed interesting to find out what exactly change the uniforms and normal clothing, therefore our project is about how the clothing changed and what affected the changes; at the beginning (1914), during (1916), and at the end (1918) of the First World War. We thought it would be interesting to see the changes in clothing in different countries, therefore we decided to choose five countries (Britain, Scotland, Russia, France, and Germany) so that we could compare.
