We
got the inspiration to choose this topic because we knew that in the First World
War, a lot of things changed. We wanted to do a project that would show the
changes through time, and we believed that clothing and fashion would be a good
way to represent the change, because it visually shows changes through time,
with rezoning. Fashion is a way that can express some changes in the way,
because clothing doesn’t change just like that, there is very often reasoning
for why the fashion/ clothing changed.
In
history class we also learned about what uniforms countries had at the start of
the War. It was impressive to see, that because some countries didn’t know what
to expect, the uniform were very inappropriate regarding the places they would
have to wear them in and the battles they would have to do with them. It seemed
interesting to see what countries did about the clothing once they noticed it
wasn’t going to be efficient, and how long I took them to realize.
Also,
another thing we learned in History class, was that there was a lot of scarcity at the home front
in the beginning of the war. This was because so much money and materials went
to the war, meaning there wasn’t a lot left in the home front. This made our
group think that the fashion must have really improved through the years, as
the beginning was poor and there was a lot of shortage with all materials and
there wasn’t enough money to make new clothing, it must have gotten better and
better towards the middle/ end of the war in the home front.
Therefore our project is about how the war affected clothing at the home front and at the war. We compared five countries; Russia, Scotland, Britain, Germany, and France to get a better picture of how every country went through first world war.
